I am a middle aged, white, minister in the reformed tradition. Sigh. I love the liturgy, I am attentive to the scripture, a theological moderate, and a social liberal (just like Jesus). I am the guy with the antique black clothes, collar, an iPhone, and an iPad.

What Saint are You?

I am St. Justin Martyr! You have a positive and hopeful attitude toward the world. You think that nature, history, and even the pagan philosophers were often guided by God in preparation for the Advent of the Christ. You find “seeds of the Word” in unexpected places. You’re patient and willing to explain the faith to unbelievers. Find out which Church Father you are at The Way of the Fathers! |

I’d like to know about your rural church. I’m a Lutheran seminarian in my internship year. I felt a strong call to rural ministry since beginning seminary. The church here is rural and I’m loving it. I’d like to hear more of your own story. I just stumbled upon your blog via the Call and Response blog. Blessings.

My prior congregation(s) were ‘more’ rural than this one. This congregation is not urban, nor is it suburban. We have a handful of farm families still in the congregation. Our Harvest Home service last week included all kinds of decorations and a tractor parade following worship. Are we rural? I guess so, at least in Spirit. We are in southeastern Pennsylvania and can be in Philadelphia in an hour, in New York City in 3 hours. Baltimore in 3 too. So, we are rural. We are not small, however. 1040 members, 350 on a Sunday over 2 services…1.5 ordained staff, 3 full-time support staff, 3 part time program staff….United Church of Christ.
